You’ve opened your closet at least three times already. Maybe you’ve pulled a few things out, held them up in the mirror, and put them back. Maybe you’ve texted your mom, your best friend, or both — and gotten completely opposite opinions. And now you’re standing there thinking, I have a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear.
If that sounds familiar, you’re in excellent company. As a Bowling Green, KY senior portrait photographer, I hear the same question before almost every session: “what to wear for senior portraits?” Almost every senior I’ve ever worked with has felt this exact way before their session. It doesn’t matter if their closet is small or overflowing — the pressure of choosing the “perfect” outfits for portraits can make even the most fashion-forward person freeze up.
Here’s the thing: there’s no perfect outfit waiting to be discovered. There’s only the outfit that feels most like you — and with a little guidance, finding it is actually a lot easier than you think. Let’s walk through it together.
Before you start pulling things off hangers, ask yourself one question: How do I want to feel in these portraits? Bold and confident? Soft and romantic? Free and adventurous? Polished and timeless? Getting clear on the feeling first gives every outfit decision a filter. Instead of “does this look good?”, you start asking “does this feel like me?”
A note for parents: try to lean into your senior’s vision first — even if it’s not what you would have chosen. When seniors wear what they love, they relax, they open up, and the portraits are almost always more beautiful for it.
A strong trio might look like: a casual, relaxed everyday look; one “wow” elevated moment; and one signature outfit that captures who you are right now in this season. You don’t need all three to be dramatically different — they just need to show different sides of you.
What works wonderfully: Solids, muted tones (dusty rose, sage, camel, slate), earthy neutrals, jewel tones (emerald, burgundy, navy), soft pastels.
Use with a little care: Busy patterns, large logos, neon colors, and trendy graphics can pull the eye away from your face. Not hard rules — just gentle suggestions.
You don’t need to buy anything new. You don’t need to look like someone else’s portraits. Braces, blemishes, and scars are part of who you are right now — these portraits are meant to preserve this moment, not sanitize it. There is no wrong answer if it feels like you.
My one piece of advice? Bring the outfit that makes you feel most like yourself — not the one you think will photograph best. I’ve seen the most breathtaking portraits come from seniors wearing their favorite worn-in flannel and a genuine smile. Confidence is always the best outfit. When you walk in feeling like you, everything else falls into place.
Every Heritage Row Photography session begins with a complimentary design consultation — and outfit planning is very much part of that conversation. We create heirloom-quality portraits to hang in your home for generations. And my HS Senior clients mainly focus on the Album, because they can take it with them and keep it for generations. Fall portrait spots are limited and go faster than you’d expect. Head to heritagerowphotography.com to schedule your complimentary consultation.
Until next time — here’s to making every moment of senior year count.
