Mexican food has a way of bringing people together — the colors, the warmth, the flavors that feel both exciting and comforting at the same time. El Mazatlan, known affectionately as El Maz by locals, has been delivering exactly that experience to Bowling Green, KY families for years. I sat down with Henry, who has been with the El Maz family for 19 years, to talk about what makes this restaurant such a welcoming place for kids and families alike.
From the moment you walk in, El Maz feels alive. The colors are vibrant, the energy is warm, and the space is clearly designed to feel welcoming to everyone — adults and children alike. Henry told me that maintaining a genuinely family-friendly atmosphere is something the ownership thinks about deliberately.
“We focus a lot on the atmosphere. We try to keep a family-friendly, kid-friendly atmosphere because we want to be able to bring our own families here,” Henry explained. That commitment extends to decisions about entertainment — El Maz intentionally skips the trivia nights and band events that many restaurants lean on, because they don’t want to compromise the environment they’ve built.
El Maz goes beyond the standard kids’ menu with something families appreciate immediately: the menus come with coloring activities and games printed right on them. It’s a small touch that makes a big difference when you’re trying to keep little ones entertained while waiting for food.
Henry’s top pick for the kids’ menu? Cheesy rice, usually paired with a quesadilla, a taco, or for the classic crowd — chicken nuggets and fries. “Kids love cheesy rice,” he told me with a smile.
For adults, Henry’s personal favorite is the Shrimp Jalisco: two skewers of bacon-wrapped shrimp with grilled onions, peppers, and cheese sauce, served with rice and beans. I can confirm the veggie fajitas are equally worth writing home about.
Henry started washing dishes at El Maz at sixteen years old. Nearly two decades later, he’s worked every position the restaurant has to offer and has no intention of leaving. That kind of loyalty speaks volumes.
“A lot of our management has been here 15 years or more,” he told me. “It’s because we love the people we work with, the way we work — it’s a good company to be with.”
That culture starts at the top and flows through every interaction with staff and customers. Families can feel it the moment they walk in.
One of the things I hear most from Bowling Green families is that dining out has gotten expensive — and that makes every outing feel like it has to count. El Maz delivers on that front. Portions are generous, prices are reasonable, and there is genuinely something for everyone on the menu, whether you want a light snack or a full family meal.
“Portions are good, prices are reasonable, and there’s always something for everybody,” Henry summed it up perfectly.
