Here’s a practical month-by-month timeline of what’s coming between now and graduation. Use it as your north star.

Aug – Sep	Senior year begins. Register for fall ACT/SAT (Oct/Nov dates). Request teacher recommendation letters early. Schedule your senior portrait session — this is the sweet spot.
Oct – Nov	ACT/SAT tests. Early Decision/Early Action college deadlines in November. Yearbook portrait submission deadlines — check with your school now.
Dec – Jan	Regular Decision application deadlines. FAFSA opens in December. Finalize your college list and get financial aid paperwork in order.
Feb – Mar	Acceptance letters arrive. Prom planning season begins — venues book fast. Some seniors schedule spring mini-sessions.

When Should You Schedule Senior Portraits? (Earlier Than You Think)

This is the question I hear most from families who call me in late spring, slightly panicked, realizing they’ve run out of time. So let me give you the honest answer.

The sweet spot is late summer through early fall — ideally September through November.

Here’s why that matters:

• Yearbook deadlines are real. Most local high schools have portrait submission deadlines in December or January. Miss that window and your senior’s portrait won’t be in the yearbook — a disappointment that’s completely avoidable with a little planning. Some schools also offer senior ad spots where your portrait can appear, and those deadlines follow the same timeline.

• Availability fills up fast. Senior portrait season is real, and experienced portrait photographers book out weeks — sometimes months — in advance. Families who reach out in September have the most flexibility. Those who wait until December often find themselves scrambling.

• Fall light is extraordinary. The angle of the sun in late summer and autumn creates warmth and texture that’s simply harder to replicate any other time of year. Rich foliage, golden-hour glow, and soft natural light combine to produce portraits that feel timeless rather than trendy.

• Early booking means less stress. Schedule your session now and your senior gets to enjoy the rest of the year without this task hanging over them. It’s done, it’s beautiful, and the worry is off the list.
